Tired... So tired...
Alan opened his eyes drowsily to find his sons arguing again.
He was tired of them fighting. Couldn't they just let him have a moment's peace?
Alan went to snap at them, same as he always did, but the words failed to come out.
He went to raise his hand to his mouth in wonder, but his hand didn't move.
Looking around frantically he realized Don and Charlie were standing in an unfamiliar room - that he was in a hospital bed.
Why? What had happened? And when?
A doctor walked in to talk to them and Alan tried to get their attention, but nothing worked - not mouth, not arms, not legs. Nothing.
The doctor spoke in compassionate tones too quiet to overhear, but when Charlie collapsed in a fit of tears in Don's arms, he knew.
He was trapped in his own body.
And no one might ever know he was in here.
Nurses tended him daily. Doctors flashed lights in his eyes. Friends stopped visiting. His sons kissed him goodbye.
He screamed in his head, railed, but no one heard.
Tired... So tired...
Exhausted from fighting, Alan begged for oblivion.
But it didn't come.
