In honor of Christmas, Mom, I didn't burn down your house

... despite my best efforts. Which is to say, I put the coffeecake in the oven, put on a pot of water for tea, went in to the living room to help Wm open a present, and the smoke detector went off. Turns out the pot of water was on the BACK burner, and I'd turned on the FRONT burner, which had a potholder lying on it. There were actual flames, 6-8" high. I dropped the potholder in the batter bowl which was sitting in the sink full of water prior to washing. Disaster averted, and thank goodness for smoke detectors.

Stupid LJ posting before I was done. Anyhow.

Wm seemed actually vaguely interested in the present-opening process, he got lots of things he can rattle or chew on, and a toy cell phone, which Pip seems to have appropriated. Pip has a huge pile of unopened gifts. He spotted the train set with the spiral track and wanted that, so we set it up for him, and I got him to open one other thing, but he just wasn't interested. So I guess we will try the one a day on the 12 days up through Epiphany and see how that goes.

For our big dinner we had leg of lamb, potato gratin, broccoli and homemade rolls. Mom looked around the table and said "huh, we have none of the stuff we traditionally have for holiday meals at uncle John's house." I a bowl of obscenely expensive raspberries in cream for dessert; we also had various homemade candies from R's mom and mom and I made fudge over the weekend. P had part of a pizza and a pile of yogurt smoothies, and Wm had bananas.
