"Wow. You're working at the Holocaust Memorial Museum? Wow. I mean, good for you but that must be totally depressing." Most common thing I've heard in response to telling people that I am volunteering at ushmm. Even ahead of "You're not jewish!" uh. i know. i was aware.
Well, I can officially report that it is not a drag of a place to work at. Everyone there is so energetic and vibrant. Jordan, the guy training me, is awesome. He was an art student at Duke Ellington, works at ushmm, and is about to start culinary school. We swapped recipes, talked about art, and joked. He's the nicest, most energetic person occupying the least amount of space ever. He was heading to the Black Family Reunion after, and I'm sure he'll rock the Mall. Awesome guy. Even the Holocaust survivors I met are wonderful and bright. They're just so glad to be alive and want to take advantage of what was denied their friends and family members. This lovely lady Ellen told me about how she escaped in the same breath she told me about her grandaughter playing trumpet in MCYO and the funniest looking outfit she saw the other day. Wiley is this half Puerto Rican, Bob Marley-ish dude who can rattle off impressions at the drop of a hat.
The weirdest was meeting the only other really young person there, who is also a senior in high school. Her name is Talia first of all. (nickname Tali). Which is already weird enough. Then her best friend lives in Argentina. Even weirder. Then she also wants to double major in theatre and international studies? What?! She has to be the only other person on the PLANET who came up with that combination! So that was a little freaky. But I had a really good time, and know all this stuff about the museum.
