In Soviet time, everybody had from time to time to do subbotniks. It was like that: on your free day, most often on Saturday (subbota) around 22nd of April (Lenin's birthday), you popped up at your working place, took a spade or a broom or a rack or whatever and went tidying "the territory" (patch of land either belonging to or just neighbouring your organization). You couldn't skip the thing, it was a minor political affront to ignore a subbotnik. Here you see three office workers toiling away at some early 60s subbotnik.
