Saving Hamlet

Em was tucked up in the cot in her office after a long night of equations. Just as she fell into the truly exhausted state of sleep, there was a rapid knocking at her office door. She groaned and threw open the old fashioned, wooden door to a heart breaking sight.

5 year old Lenny was standing there in his Captain Blasto pajamas and in absolute tears. Em looked up to see his out of breath nanny careening around the corner. She turned her attention back to her son who held up a brown and white mess of stuffing in front of her. "Momma! Momma!" he sniffled.

Em immediately scooped her son up into her arms. "Lenny, honey, what's wrong?"By the time Rachel caught up, she was still out of breath. "Rachel, why don't you take the night off? I'll take care of Lenny." She grinned at the poor girl. Rachel nodded and walked off. Em walked over to her cot and set Lenny down.

He held up the mess in front of her again. "Momma! Can you fix Hamlet?"

Em stared at the former teddy bear. "Wha...what happened to Hamlet, sweetie? Isn't daddy home right now?"

Lenny sniffled and shook his head. "No. Daddy's working. Can you fix him? Mrs. Thomas' dog ate Hamlet." She picked up the mess and walked over to her desk. "Is Hamlet going to be ok?"

She smiled at him. "I promise, if you go to sleep, Hamlet will be good as new when you wake up. But you need to go to sleep, baby." She took out a small needle and thread kit she kept in her desk and began to work at the tears. Lenny's hiccups faded into soft snores.

Somewhere around 2 in the morning, Em heard her door crack open again. She looked up to see David walk in, looking as exhausted as she did. "You know, I almost half suspect the three of us live in your office, Emmy." he whispered. Em chuckled softly. "What happened to Hamlet?"

"Now, Dr. McCoy, Hamlet is in surgery. You're going to have to wait with the rest of the family." Em joked. David gave her a look before settling onto the cot with Lenny in his arms. She watched as father and son settled into sleep. The sight warmed her heart over as she continued to sew Lenny's beloved teddy bear back together.

The sun warmed her face as it streamed through the window of her office. "Hamlet!" screeched a voice. Em bolted up in her chair. Lenny raced into her arms. "Momma, you fixed Hamlet!" She smiled sleepily as he lifted the bear up and held him close. "Thank you, momma." She just nodded at him.

David groaned as he sat up and stretched. "Now your momma has worked hard all night to fix Hamlet. We should probably fix her a nice lunch to say thank you. What do you say?" he asked.

"Yeah!" Lenny smiled at her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Daddy and me will make a special lunch for you, momma." He then turned to Hamlet and began to give him a lecture to the dangers of playing with Mrs. Thomas' dog.

David easily picked him up into his arms and gave Em a quick peck. "Love you, darlin." he whispered. She grinned at him before settling into sleep in her office chair again.
