Uphill Climb [Joanna and Emma and McCoy (maybe) - NVC Day 12, Morning]

Em whistled as she clicked through the various places that supposedly had the best spots for rock climbing. Hrm, things might be a bit hairy because of the low atmo here... she reflected.

She sat down on the bed, careful not to disturb her sleeping husband as she awaited for her granddaughter to call.

Em fiddled with the sunglasses that perched on her nose. She'd already made the reservation for both of them and checked out climbing equipment. Now all she had to do was wait for her beloved granddaughter. She took the time to stretch and warm up, loosening her limbs for the physical activity ahead.

I hope she makes it. Haven't gone rock climbing in decades.

Jo came jogging up, dressed in new, comfortable clothing that was designed to take a beating, and rock-climbing shoes. "Hey Maw-maw. Ready to try not to fall to our deaths? Paw-Paw will get mad if we do that."

She waved it off. "Aw, honey, I've died once already." Em joked with a shoulder bump. "Come on, there's a cliff face with our names on it. " She, herself, was dressed in a comfortable pair of shorts, athletic tank top, and a pair of rented climbing shoes. She led the way out of the shop and towards the cliff face, staring up at it.

"Which means you shouldn't make a habit of it," Jo scolded. "Don't need you upsettin' your son."

"So have you scouted a route up yet or are we going blind?"

"Figure we just go up and come back down whenever we feel like it. Honestly, haven't done this since I was probably about your age." After the rigging and such was hooked, she gave Joanna a smile and began the slow ascend.

Jo made sure she was rigged properly and followed Emma. "So that was what, last year?"

She laughed. "Try 20 years ago. Grew up in San Fransisco, myself. So the last rockface I've tackled was El Capitan. You enjoying your break, honey?"

"Don't believe you," Jo teased, carefully testing each grip before pulling herself up to the next one. "I'm enjoyin' it just fine. Went camping, took care of a little academic stuff, snuck into a bunch of lectures, went shopping with Pasha, it's all good."

"Where do you think you got your good looks from, baby?" she laughed as she continued the climb. "Sounds like you're having a ball. Did you send out applications for grad school yet?"

"I'm already good for my doctorate, Spock agreed to be my adviser," Jo responded. "If I actually stay on course this time, I should have my doctorate in Biotechnology by the time I turn twenty five."

A wide smile appeared on Em's face. "Oh honey, I'm so happy for you! And biotech, nonetheless! Any idea what your thesis is gonna be on?" She gave a grunt and secured her footing before going up a bit more.

"Nope, not yet. I'm sure something will come up when we get towards exploring," Jo answered. "That's how I got my Masters thesis subject. Ran into a problem and I got to be on the fixing team."

"And you're doing it through Starfleet, right?" She slowed her climb, feeling the lower level of oxygen slowly getting to her. "Now, remind me, does that require a cap and gown ceremony?"

"Yep," Jo nodded, from her spot just under Emma. "Starfleet's gonna be my Doctoral University."

"I suppose, if I wanted I could go through the whole hullabaloo of a hooding ceremony, and all that, but it's not really necessary. And it'd be a pain in the butt, unless we could arrange it to somehow coincide with a trip back to Earth. It's not like there's anyone on Earth itself that'd come, so we'd have to turn the entire ship around to go deal with that." She hadn't bothered with her Masters degree to even consider something like that. Maybe she would have in her old world but now? Very little point.

"Any way we could have it on the ship? Like an ad hock ceremony? I'd like to do the MawMaw thing where I get to take lots of embarrassing pictures and fawn as to how brilliant my grandbaby is. Only difference between that and how I regularly fawn over your genius is that there's a piece of paper and a ridiculous hat that goes along with it."

"I've got three other pieces of paper that say what a genius I am," Jo shook her head. "You could fawn over them?" She really didn't get the big deal. The proof was in the pudding, and she preferred celebrating when she got the work done, not when she had pretty pieces of paper telling her what she already knew.
