Jonathan Strange... takes place in 19th century Britain, in a world where magic is real and accepted among certain circles. Not in a Harry Potter way though, it's more like a scholarly pursuit for people with land/money. It's more grounded than the average magic novel, but with enough flights of fancy to keep things unusual. It's a pretty thick tome so I don't think I can really do it justice in a short summary.
The Historian is a highly literate version of the vampire novel, about a young woman who must follow a trail of documents around the world in search of her parents while uncovering the legend of the vampire at the same time. Her father is a noted historian and she is set to follow in his footsteps. Her mother may or may not have died when she was a young child. It dips into the genre, but doesn't always go where you expect it to go.
I didn't finish Life of Pi because I was staying at my cousin's house in Vancouver at the time. I started the novel shortly before I had to leave, so I just didn't have the time to finish it. I liked what I read though. :-) Must go to the library and find it again.
