Why are the strong, interesting female characters disappearing from the TV shows I watch?
First it was Agent Elle Greenaway in "Criminal Minds." Now Sara from "Men in Trees" is gone (or at least I assume so since Suleka Mathew's name is no longer in the opening credits). Will this become an unfortunate pattern?
I watched CM mainly because it was between Jericho and CSI:NY and partly because it could scare me. But now that Greenaway, the coolest character on that show, is gone, I'm not going to bother watching. CM has been downgraded to the same second-or-third tier level of TV viewing as Supernatural and The Ghost Whisperer. Meaning that I will watch these shows if I'm bored and have nothing important to do, because while they're not compelling enough for me to keep up with, they are mildly entertaining. At least Greenaway got a good storyline to end with, and it looks like the actress wanted to leave rather than being booted off.
As for MiT, was the cast too big for the writers/producers to handle? I didn't find anything wrong with the character of Sara -- her scenes and interactions with the other characters never felt forced or pointless. The show is a blend of comedy and drama, but now that I think about it, Sara was too serious. She didn't get as much opportunity to play the more light-hearted stuff. I guess her character simply didn't fit in with the whole vibe of MiT.
