reading orgy

I've been doing a bit of procrastinating on the writing front by playing catch up with my reading. Mostly unpublished stuff, of course, but no less fun as a result. I'm in the middle of a really original fantasy with romantic elements that has me twitching to head back to the couch and finish it. But I promised myself I'd put in a few hours of work on some things due Thursday so I don't have a nervous breakdown tomorrow night trying to finish them. Of course, here I am back at the computer updating my journal. Heh.

As for personal reading, I've finally gotten to Hammered by Elizabeth Bear (matociquala), which I've been anxious to read for absolutely months, but wanted to wait until the rest of the trilogy was out and I was going to have time to cruise right through them (as fast as I cruise through any books these days). Loving it, as expected, and looking forward to the rest of the series. Talk about a great, strong voice. Also, picked up a copy of Jen Lancaster's Bitter Is the New Black, which is a chick-lit style memoir I'd heard some good things about (plus I know the editor and appreciate her quirky taste). I think this falls into the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction category, under "things that won't help you get ahead unless you tend to land jelly side up." I'm looking forward to a good laugh. I realized I don't tend to read that many funny books, just like I lean toward TV dramas over sitcoms. It's nice to change it up a bit from time to time. That will probably be it for comedy for the time being, though, since my to-read pile is heavily weighted with science fiction and YA right now. Both for research purposes and entertainment. Multi-tasking is my friend.

Ah, the bliss of knowing I've got several nice plane trips in the next few weeks, and all that captive time to read. Wheee!
