Haven't been here in a while! This is recycled from restlessphoenix.com:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've made a decision: I need to stop listening to crap music. Or should I say, I need to stop listening to only crap music. Shania Twain will always have a place on my iPod, waiting for the occasional but inevitable moments when it is necessary to drive with your girlfriends with all the windows down, singing about coloring your hair and doing what you dare, because man, I feel like a woman.
But there comes a point when you realize that there has to be something more out there. For me, this has been the point at which 1) the alt-rock station in CT suddenly jumped on the sizzlin' hip-hop jams bandwagon (not that it was so great to begin with); 2) the major pop stations in the state all grab hold of certain songs and play them over and over and over until you have no choice to hate them, but also no choice to listen to them, because each other station is playing the exact same song at the exact same time.
I am down with different kinds of music. I can't think of a genre that I really don't like. But why is everything converging, and why is nothing meaningful anymore? I mean, take rap. I am down with the Tupac. Tupac had some things to say for himself, you know? When did rap get to be all about bling-bling and taking off all your clothes and being a pimp? Remember when sometimes, rappers would rap about social issues? I mean, just SOMETIMES at least would be nice.
Like I'm an expert on rap.
So here's the part where you come in. What is good music, to you? Give me five names. Five people or groups or whatever that make good music, and why it's good music. Give me some direction, before the incessant pop music completely melts my brain. Please? I will even post what you have to say here, for all the world (read: five people) to see. But more importantly, I will listen, and it will be good.
