So lynx and I have been saying for a while, "NO MORE BOOKS UNTIL WORLDCON." We're driving, after all, so we figure we can just buy ALL the books in Montreal and throw them in the trunk. But then Readercon happened, and, and, there were books! They had books! Which was expected, but they also had a lot of small presses with stuff we couldn't be sure of getting at Worldcon, so, um, we bought books. Kind of a lot. So I do the rundown of what I got, and maybe at some point he'll post about what he got, IDK, there were a lot of old, cheap paperbacks in his stack so they may not be worth posting about except to say, "I got a stack of cheap, old paperbacks." That's up to him.
Me? I ended up with a bunch of anthologies and some other stuff.
The New Weird, antho I got pretty much for the cover and a Jay Lake story.
The Stress of Her Regard, by Tim Powers, because it looked cool and it's one of the TP books everyone always talks about when they talk about TP, and I've only ever read The Drawing of the Dark by him, which no one ever wants to talk about. *pout* It's good you guys, I promise. It has magical beer. But I'll read this too and probably like it.
Medicine Road, by Charles de Lint, illustrated by Charles Vess, because de Lint is one of those names I buy almost without thinking, and Vess illustrations? Oh I'm there.
Electric Velocipede 17/18, because like the t-shirt says, if I didn't read it
ktempest was going to smack me around. She had her fan out and was feeling sassy, so I thought it best not to argue. Plus again, Jay Lake, plus they published
shadesong, although this is not her issue. So clearly they're awesome, even if there is a Will Sh*tterly contribution in there.
Weird Women, Wired Women, a collection of Kit Reed's short stories (and she was there, so signed!) I'll be honest, there's a lot of SF canon that I'm missing, and Miss Reed is one of them, but from the description of her stories and their importance, I was sold, plus the foreword was by Connie Willis, and Connie Willis told me to buy the book (in the foreword. She was not at Readercon), and, you know? I trust Connie on stuff like that. Looking forward to it, even if I do think some of these will scare the pants off me.
Daughters of Earth, Feminist Science Fiction in the Twentieth Century. Hello, this is relevant to my interests. Both this and the Kit Reed were from the Wesleyan Press table, and I'm really glad I hit them when I did, as they weren't there on Sunday. And they publish
fjm, so you know they're awesome.
Clockwork Phoenix 1 & 2 because again, relevant to my interests and
yuki_onna is in both, along with a bunch of other people I love, plus
yuki_onna said yesterday that one of the stories in the second was completely amazing, so I'm glad I got them!
Demon Lovers and Other Difficulties, a chapbook from Goblin Fruit, with poems by
wirewalking plus one by her and
csecooney! I heard them read their joint poem, and it's pretty amazing. Plus everyone involved in this is awesome beyond all reason. It's pretty great, and you should get one.
2009 Rhysling Anthology. Well, I had to, didn't I?
tithenai's award-winning poem is in there. Plus other good stuff, of course. :)
In the Forest of Forgetting, by Theodora Goss. Dora and I have met a couple of times at various things, but this weekend was the first time we had a chance to say more than five words to each other, and wow. Talk about a classy lady. She just blows me away with elegance. And a really cute kid. :) So this is a collection of her short stories, and it looks really, really good.
desideria,
wirewalking's first novel! Eeeee, it looks so good Nicole I can't wait to read it!
Paper Cities, An Anthology of Urban Fantasy: which DOES NOT MEAN supernatural romance, you guys! I mean, there might be some of that, but I'm pretty sure that's not the entirety of the collection, which is awesome.
yuki_onna's in this one too, as well as Jay Lake again, Ekaterina Sedia edited it, and
ratmmjess wrote the intro! Cat's story in this is the original Palimpsest short story, which I love more than cake.
Sybil's Garage 6, because again,
ktempest was right there and I forgot to get it at Wiscon. Or was out of money, something like that.
So yeah, that's pretty much everything I got. Good con. Good people. BOOOOOKS.
Of course I still haven't finished reading everything from Wiscon, and won't have time to finish much more before Worldcon, where the stack will get even higher, but whatever.
I keep thinking I need a books icon, but my default's a pretty good choice for that. . .
