this is mainly in response to eliza's recent entry on politics
---------------------------------
well, first of all, i agree that money corrupts. money is the manifestations of humankind's greed. and greed feeds itself therefore, as dismal as it may sound, "economics" is a vicious cycle.
the observation on the size and magnitude of population of the united states in comparison to other countries was very astute. it is undeniable, in my opinion, that other "empires" (because we all know that's what america really is, a giant, corporate empire. pre-wwII great britian, anyone?) in the past have eventually collapsed: holy roman empire, great britian (when they possessed colonies) soviet union, etc. a country with such a large land mass and varied demographics and massive population fall much quicker than, say, poland. we can already see the great shift in our society, such extremes displayed in everyday politics, vast differences between the populants' lifestyles (compare kentucky with califonia), massive and, as eliza so eloquently put, informal.
the reason i vote in light of such a dismal and cynical future is that i desperately want to make the world better now, for those living their lives, just trying to find their next meal, or even their next simple piece of happiness. a law can never "fix" the imperfections of humanity: murder, theft, drug use (haha), discrimination, etc. but a law can give a child the chance to go to school (mandatory school enrollment) or provide a poor family with a meal (food stamps) or get a grandmother her pills (elderly prescription plan *a plan that has yet to be developed*) or give all women the right to decide when to start a family and how many children she can support (roe v. wade) or even to give voice to the beliefs that we hold most dear (free speech).
it is for THESES symbols of (relative) freedom that i vote.
