50 first dates

I miss first dates! In lieu of having any more first dates anytime soon, I would like to live vicariously through you!

Please share with me a story of a first (or whenever!) date that was most memorable to you.

I love telling this story. You may have read parts of it before, for which I'll apologize in advance.

Last year during Mini Bike Winter, I'd started talking to Shawn. I mean, I'd seen him around and knew who he was (and to me, he was a slight celebrity--he has art and comics published in a magazine I read, has notecards etc. for sale in a few places I frequent, I already owned several of his zines, and he has led various bicycle rides for about five years--he's well-known in parts of the local bicycle community, and the zine community in general), but I'd never really chatted him up alone. We ended up hanging out in a pub for several hours on Saturday night, and then on Sunday pretty much closed the Hungry Tiger Too, at which point we exchanged phone numbers and he said, "We should hang out later this week..."

He emailed me two days later to ask if Los Gorditos on Division on Thursday night was okay and I agreed. "Oh shit," I though to myself. "This is...a DATE."

I brought knitting with me because I was nervous. I also, I realized after I left the house, dressed a lot like the women he draws--striped socks and cute scarf and all. I got there early because I was anxious, he was right on time. We ate Mexican food outside and chatted and it started getting chillier..."Do you want to get a beer? The Horse Brass Pub is non-smoking now, they have lots of good beers..." so off we went.

Heh. We had three pints of yummy beer apiece. We were seated at a tiny round table, and our chairs kept scooting just the tiniest bit closer together, and we'd lean into each other just a tiny bit more...he eventually got brave and took my hand across the table, just kind of held it and pet it. I have no idea what we talked about. I'm not sure it mattered! In any case, after three pints holy crap, I had to pee. I excused myself, and while doing my thing thought, "This is silly." I have a tendency of dating geekier guys who might be shy with the ladies. Conveniently, I have zero problem being forward. And if a guy doesn't like a forward lady, I don't want to date him anyway.

Which is how I came to be nervously whistling as I made my way back to our table (I do not remember doing this--Shawn put it in a zine later and insists I did--but it sounds like the kind of thing I'd do and not notice), and then without a word, leaned over and kissed him, and then said, "So, where do you live again?" "Not far, do you want to come over?" "Yes!"

A few months later while thinking about that evening, I said to Shawn, "Heeeey...you suggested we go to Horse Brass because it was close to your house!" To which he responded, "Of course I did!"

This has been one of the very few relationships etc. in my life that actually had a first date!

That is so adorable. I also bring knitting out to be places when I am nervous!

I knit insanely fast when I'm nervous. But my stitches end up a bit smaller, too!

Do you knit continental? I need to sit down with someone and learn that way because english knitting is so slow!

I know it well enough to teach people to knit that way, but I find it really awkward (especially purling), so I don't knit that way generally.

It's handy to know the basics for fair isle though...I've done one tiny thing in fair isle, and let me tell you: don't do it on dpns. You spend more time untangling yarn than knitting, and it's almost impossible to get the "floats" long enough!

Try youtube! or knittinghelp.com...she's got really good videos.
