I recently went to Vegas for a ye old family vacation and thought Adelaide and Mig could use a little fun in the sun...Adelaide was a very good girl, making quiet thoughtful requests to see the mountains or to have breakfast at Paris Casino. Mig however was frequently MIA, emptying my change purse & stumbling into the buffet the next morning, smelling like a cigar. She was coerced out to Red Rock Canyon one day because we really felt she needed the fresh air. We walked an awful lot and the girls ate too much shrimp cocktail and chocolates shaped like poker chips. Our flight was cancelled due to snow and we had to stay at a creepy old casino - the girls decided to stay in the suitcase for that one!
Here are a few snapshots from the trip - I hope you enjoy them!
Adelaide waited across the "street" at the boulangerie while we stood in
line for the coveted Paris breakfast buffet.
Afterwards, we walked off the pastries with a trip to the Eiffel Tower.
Adelaide decided this was her favorite spot - on the bridge to the elevator.
She swore she spied Mig at the slots below...
The Eiffel Tower's view of the strip is not so cool in the daytime but we
made the best of it, looking through old viewfinders where we could see for
miles.
Mig at the Red Rock Canyons. It was incredibly windy and a little chilly but
we all braved the gales and peeked over the edges into the depths below...
Adelaide at the highest elevation on our tour. Mig decided to get too close
to the edge at this point and lost a shoe - much to all of our dismay.
Finally we stopped at warm spot, sheltered from the wind. Adelaide and I
climbed up a little ways, but she felt too unsure about climbing any higher.
Mig, in a rare burst of energy, climbed to a very high ledge and recited a
poem about the morning and listened to her echo...
The sisters, relaxing on a rock before we resumed the car ride back to the
city. I took away Mig's other shoe for safe keeping. The girls shared
cornflakes stolen from the breakfast buffet with my brothers and left the
rest for the scrub jays.
In exchange for coming along to the canyons, we accompanied Mig to her
favorite place in Vegas - Fremont St. She says the old and grimy coolness
just seems so much more like Vegas than the glamour filled shopping malls on
the strip. I am inclined to agree. Sadly, she made me drink too many cheap
margaritas and my pictures all came out blurry!!
Adelaide thought this setting was perfect for a "Gina Garan" type feel....
Dizzy from the lights and too many sips from my drinks, promptly after this
photograph was taken Mig fell in the garbage can they were sitting on.
A new day! Mig was still in the bath when we left, with chewable aspirin.
Adelaide and I were more than happy to set out on the family road trip to
the hoover dam. Coffee and Kenners - that's all you need in the morning!
Standing carefully at the railing, we took in the view of the dam's low
side.
We walked across the top of the dam, ending up in Arizona - a whole new time
zone! It was sunnier over there ;)
On the way back we visited the memorial statues, great copper Art Deco
angels. They say it's good luck if you rub their feet. Adelaide has had a
lot of good luck already (rescued from dingoes, rescued from recycling) but
we thought it couldn't hurt. I lifted her up to touch the feet.
Finally, we stopped in tiny Boulder City to look through antique shops for
toys and old license plates. Most shops were closed but in a vast, rambling
store with an over eager shopkeeper we found a lovely pair of tiaras.
Adelaide wore it all the way home to Toronto. (Excuse this silly photo of me!)
Oof! if you've read this far - thank you for checking out our vacation!
