This weekend I brought the cats to the vet and one needs to lose 5 pounds and the other needs to have his teeth brushed every day. Also I had to throw out my houseplant that was making the cats barf, apparently. It was the saddest vet visit ever.
Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen.
I didn't love this as much as everyone else did--the plot and the characters were pretty clunky, and the morality system switches weirdly between contemporary and era-appropriate beliefs. Still, circuses! Elephants!

The Savage Detectives: A Novel, Roberto Bolano
It took me a long long time to get into this...halfway through the book I was still forcing myself to pick it up and keep reading. But now that I'm finished, it keeps haunting me and little bits and pieces keep floating up into my consciousness throughout the day. It's sprawling and messy and complicated and often boring, but vital and tumbling and moving and powerful.
5/5
Transformers, dir. Michael Bay
Awful, awful, awful. I was hoping it would be dumb and awesome, but it was just dumb--too much CGI made the transforming and fighting scenes messy and impossible to follow, the characters were nails-on-a-chalkboard bad (the shrewish mother teases her son about masturbation! The hispanic character keeps speaking in Spanish! THERE IS A CHIHUAHUA! HILARIOUS), and the plot made no sense whatsoever.
