It's pretty surreal to think that I'm actually writing this from Rome, as I haven't been wandering around the city (ie, visited the forum) yet, but it's definitely a nice change from the frozen wasteland that is Minnesota. Flights were long and boring--exactly how I like them and I am always amazed that a) the EU has NO customs. Seriously, I sort of flashed a passport in Amsterdam and then just wandered off the plane and onto the street in Rome. All that hassle to get a visa and no one even looks at it! No one even stamped the passport. b) why is european airplane food better than most regular US food? There must be something wrong here. I was in economy class and got decent chicken, fresh sliced apples, milano cookies and a little glass-sized bottle of (decent!) red wine. How does this work?
The centro is quite charming, a little dorm with a nice front driveway, little common room/entry, small library, computer lab (all macs, of course), classroom and then housing on the 2nd and 3rd floor. Somehow I seem to have ended up with a single (yay!) which is admittedly tiny, but has a great view of the street, my own sink, and a nice closet. I also look over the front gate so I can see who's coming back with who at all hours of the night ;)
That's about all I know for the moment--there's a rough class schedule posted that looks as though it's out in the city all morning and languages all afternoon, but we won't get a full orientation until Monday. Until then, I'll be trying to find people to wander through the city with me. For now, it's dinner and naptime, since I've just literally pulled an all-nighter to get over here!
