week two

Not that I'm counting or anything, but I've now completed my second week of my last year in law school. Man, this shit is lame. All evidence suggests that law school only needs to be two years plus about a year as an apprentice. Instead it's three years of overpriced tuition, books, and travel plus two summers of working either for free/cheap or being completely overpaid. After which about 25% of graduates (who are usually about 25 years old) go out into the world and make waaaayyy too much money and it starts to totally define them and change them. The rest of us go into any number of other areas, which seems much more emotionally managable, at least from my perspective. God only knows what would become of me if I went from my current state of living off less than $20k a year (most of which is student loans) to making $125,000 (the going rate for new attorneys at huge firms). I really think it would be the end of me.

That's neither here nor there, at least not for the moment anyway.

This week was a little better than last. I joined the master's swim team at the JCC. It sounds more impressive than it is. Basically I am the swim team because the other woman who signed up doesn't come to practice much since she's not really a swimmer. My coach is really nice and laid back and kicks my ass 4 times per week for about an hour. It's been really fun, though my Tuesday and Thursday schedule goes from 7am to 7pm pretty much nonstop.

I'm barely putting in any hours at work, which really sucks. I got used to being here a lot and being a part of the team and all that and now I just kind of show up and chip away at this pile of work for a few hours two or three times per week. The worst part is I make about half as much money as I did last year just because I can't get the hours in.

So I have a few goals for myself in the next few years. Here they are:
Make time to be more artsy. Being a lawyer sucks, so I need to be more right-brained.
Complete the Alcatraz 100 swim from Alcatraz Island to San Fransisco (1.25 miles)
Complete the Pennock Island Swim Challenge in Ketchikan, AK (8 miles in 60 degree water...sexy!)

Go ahead, laugh. But I'm going to be the one with paint-stained hands wearing the "I finished the Pennock Island Challenge" t-shirt and you're not. : )
