Summer days and summer nig....no, just days

I have made my decision for the summer after many interviews and much soul searching.

You may recall that I have been offered a position with a non-profit in Juneau, AK (i.e. my place of birth) for this summer. I was a little on the fence about it because it's very far away and I tend to lean toward non-profit work whether it will be a good career move for me or not.

Anyway, I kept sending out resumes over the past few weeks and got an interview with Liberty Mutual. The money they're offering is amazing ($18/hour) and for some reason I had it in my head that it would be a corporate law position. I went to the interview and found out it's actually staff defense counsel for the insurance company. In a nutshell these people argue why hard-working Americans should not get to use the insurance policies they've been paying for all this time. That definately rubbed me the wrong way. Then the lawyer who interviewed me said that most of his law clerks go into personal injury (no thank you) and described the work in more detail, plus said that there was no way I could do a split summer in AK and Liberty Mutual. To top it all off he wanted me to start right away, which would leave my current boss in a really bad position and would be totally thoughtless of me.

I spent the rest of the day soul searching and decided to take the Alaska job. I realized that the staff attorney was taking a bit of a risk by offering me the position (lack of administrative and environmental law background) and that it is one of those opportunities that simply will not come around again. It will be good for my soul and the stipend they're offering is good enough to make it worth while. Plus SEACC is a consortium of organizations, so I'll get to make amazing Northwest connections with all sorts of non-profits and the northwest DOJ offices.

Leigh probably won't be able to come with me for the whole 10 weeks, but she is going to try to take a short leave of absence from her job and spend the month of July with me. That way we'll only be apart for about 3 weeks at a time.

The best part is that my boss has assured me that I can return to this job when I get back in August and through my 3L year.

This is just another example of how when I truly trust in God to lead me in the right direction things will truly fall into place. I am so happy and comfortable with this decision that I cannot imagine this having gone any other way. I actually cannot believe that I once desperately wanted to work at a large law firm making tons of money. How is that fun? Instead I get to have an adventure, work with really cool people, and do something that I'm really excited about.

As for the subject line of this entry, I just read online that the average summer day in Juneau has 17 hours of daylight. : )

ye olde job search, pss, law school, summer job, seacc, leigh, alaska
