I took Thursday and Friday off from work this week to come down to DC for two job interviews and a breakfast meeting. I decided to fly because I had a voucher from when US Airways made me sleep in the public area of Reagan last summer on a marble floor because they're a bunch of screw-ups. I digress.
I hate to fly, especially in and out of Buffalo because of the wind, rain, and snow. It's always just that much scarier. Plus there is clearly something unnatural about human beings suspending a mile or so up in the air. It's just not right but, as I told Leigh Wednesday, until scientists perfect Apparration I will have to fly a few times a year. To make things more stressful, before boarding the plane a flight attendant told everyone in the gate to use the bathroom before boarding the plane because it was going to be really bumpy. Great. That means I had an hour of shear terror to look forward to. Turns out that after the horrifying take off (planes blowing side to side, tilting, lots of bumps) we got above the clouds and it was completely smooth until landing.
I took the metro straight from Reagan (after revisiting my fond memories of our night together last summer on my way home to see my wife) to my hotel near McPherson Square on K & 12th. It's pretty nice. Very comfy and clean, the only problem is there's very little affordable food here. Today I will eat at Cosi twice because it's the only place within 2 blocks that isn't a 3 or 4 start restaurant. I could walk a few blocks to Quiznos, or a few more blocks to the Metro to Chipotle in Chinatown, but that has lost its novelty somehow. No, I'll stick with Cosi. They have yummy bagels.
Today I had two interviews. Well, one was a full-on callback and the other was the product of me e-mail stalking and insisting a partner at a securities boutique firm talk to me. I ended up meeting his partner who I found to be one of those genuinely nice but very prickly people. I've never done well with prickly people, we just didn't mesh, but it was good to meet him and establish another contact in DC. They're not sure if they're even hiring for the summer yet, but I have a feeling if they decide to I'll be getting a phone call sometime in April or May. That's a little long to wait.
My full-on call back interview went pretty well, but I'm really nervous to hear the outcome. They said they'll get back to me within 2 weeks, which I can already tell will be the longest 2 weeks of my life. The good news is that if I get the job I'll be set for summer before Christmas, which was my goal all along. Plus I am truly 100% interested in the firm. It sounds like an amazing opportunity. The bad news is if I don't get the job I will have almost no more prospects other than the boutique firm and the government applications I sent out, and let's face it that neither of those options are particularly promising.
Tonight I am resigning myself to homework, TV, food, and maybe a swim in the hotel pool. I'm pretty exhausted after running around in heels and a suit all day and Metroing from DC to Virginia to DC and then walking a ways to my second interview. I fly home tomorrow, back to my wife and kids/cats.
