five wonderful things about living in a rural area, according to emily...
- folks out here actually make real life, salinger-like, 30 minute long, life changing speeches about big business and it's effect on rural community, while standing in line at the produce stand.
- neighbors bring over bags and bags of surplus produce, just because they like to garden and saw we were home.
- having a huge garden and lots of animals doesn't give anyone a bad name like it would in the suburbs, and the only people in the area thought of as "strange" are the hippies down the road (who don't really seem all that strange to me!)
- going anywhere of distance requires a lot of thought, effort and stamina, not to mention pricey gas, so there are less spontanious trips out for junk food :) (besides, what's a fresh melon from the neighbors, to a bag of chips?)
- driving up a random local driveway to hop out and ask the residents (who are ALL outside) if they've seen three big dogs running loose is a good way to meet neighbors and friends (and a great way to find your dogs!)
