Great news! I applied for the trainee handyperson post, and have an interview on Monday afternoon. Thank you to everyone for all the ace positive "go for it" type advice, because I did, and it paid off!
I have spoken to my immediate manager about theoretically asking for a temporary reduction in working hours for my admin job, and she said it would be theoretically possible, and that I should apply for the post. So now that I have been offered an interview, tomorrow I am talking to my main manager to let him know that I have applied for this job, and if/how this could be accomodated, as one of the things that will probably come up at the interview is how I would fit it in with my current job.
Also, after lengthy discussion with various friends, we have agreed that the best thing to wear for an interview is a "slightly smarter version of what you would wear if you were doing the job" so I will pick something from my wardrobe this weekend. Fingers crossed for both doing well at the interview and also my employers being accomodating in my request for a reduction in working hours!
