Memory - all alone in the moonlight.

Last night I saw a performance of Cats at the Fox Theater here in Atlanta. This was the second time I've seen the show (admittedly the first time was nearly 10 years ago), but I still just don't get it. I'm not just talking about the plot itself, though that would be a whole lot more comprehensible if the songs weren't all sung so high and the cats didn't have a tendency to speak in unison, all 25 of them. But mostly I don't get why this show was so critically acclaimed and why it ran on Broadway for 50 million years. Is the theater-going public primarily made up of Crazy Cat Ladies?

I'm honestly curious. If you love this show, or you know someone who loves this show, please tell me why. Inform me. Talk down to me if you wish. Mock me and my uncultured ways. But I really want to know.

But it's interesting to note, however, that even Cats has things that can make the immature child in me laugh. Take the line "If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is" from Memories, for example. Or the time when a line of three male cats basically thrust into each other while singing the line "Jellicle cats are not too big". Heh. I was *not* slashing the dancers from Cats.

Also, since I was at the show, I missed Lost, which wasn't much of a problem thanks to my vcr (alas, no TiVo). Or it wouldn't have been a problem if the tape I used wasn't at the very end. I only got about 2 minutes of actual show. I'm surprisingly not that upset about it, though. Probably because I know I'll see it eventually. But I will be upset if I find out it was a really good episode with a lot of stuff with my favorite people. It appeared to be primarily focused on Michael, however, so whatever. Shut up, Michael. I can't work up any sympathy for you even though you lost your kid.
