I am on my computer and it's Shabbat.
This is not something I want to get in the habit of for one really good reason. I am on my computer entirely too much. Though I haven't watched a single movie or TV episode since I got here (which is totally weird when I think about it, but doesn't feel totally weird right now), I have been on my computer nonstop. Because I haven't started HUC yet and my days tend to be long and spent holed up in my apartment studying for my Hebrew exam, I am very lonely. I haven't had the opportunity to Skype many people who aren't mom and dad because the time difference is pretty radical. It does tend to get to me late at night as well, when it's about 3-8 pm at home and I should be sleeping (but I'm often not because of how hot it's been... there is a definite heat wave going on) I get lonely and I turn on my computer to check if there's anyone online for me to talk to. Unfortunately, there very rarely ever is. I'm sure once I get into school and start making friends things will be different, and once the exam is over and we feel more free to go out and explore it will be better. I feel though if I can get in the habit of turning my computer on on Shabbat it will bring a little more balance into my life and maybe chip away at my internet addiction a bit. I'm sure Matt could attest to my horrible internet addiction, it's certainly not something I'm proud of, but as an information nerd, I constantly have the craving to learn something new, and I have a real problem with being out of the loop. Anyway, it's about time I stopped being on the computer as much as I am and start living my life in the outside world a bit more.
In other news,
Tonight I went for Shabbat dinner at the Englanders. The apartment they're renting is absolutely incredible. It's in the neighbourhood next to mine, and it has the most incredible view I've seen so far. It's perched sort of at the top of a valley and you can see all the way down into the Old City, and up the next hill over. I really can't explain it in words that do it justice; after my exam I will take photos. All I can tell you is the whole city was lit up and there were fireworks going almost the whole night. The food was incredible, I'm more stuffed than I have been all week, and I'm just about to get back into studying before heading off to bed with my new found copy (left in the closet by somebody very nice obvioiusly) of the Deathly Hallows.
