Something rather embarassing happened in Venice, when Hatsumi and I were walking around. We passed the Rialto Bridge, and she said "The Rialto Bridge! We turn left here." I asked her if she was sure, and she said, "Of course, it looks just like the one at Las Vegas." Now, that was bad, but not as bad as the time when I was in Switzerland and saw the Matterhorn from the window of the train. "The Matterhorn!" I said, pointing at the picturesque mountain. Then everybody wanted to know how I recognized it so quickly and without even looking at a guidebook, obviously admiring my intimate familiarity with Swiss mountains, and I was forced to admit that it was because it looked exactly like the Disneyland ride.
There are probably lots of philosophical implications one can draw from this sort of thing, but I have a train to catch, so guess who gets to do that bit? Yup. You.
