Davai!

Language learning is a funny thing. Today on the bus into London, I was sitting in front of a man talking in Russian on his mobile phone, and I realised that I could actually pick out a few words. Namely a familiar "how are you?" and also "let's go" (see above).

Yuri on Ice is a delightfully multilingual canon but writing fic for it does mean that the phrases you pick up are rather... particular. My Icelandic is good enough for me to read novels, but even the cheesy romance novels I picked up from a Westfjords library don't always provide you with the, shall we say, stylistic range needed to write fanfic. Sure, I could write "you are so beautiful" in Icelandic, but "I'm going to come?" In the idiomatic sense? Nope. I now know how to write it in French, though! Thank you, Christophe Giacometti, your good deeds are many.

(Other vocabulary treasures: 'fuck' in the imperative. Clearly a beginner's word if ever you saw one. I can babble on about geothermal phenomena in Icelandic till the sheep come home, but could I write an evening in bed in the Katsuki-Nikiforov household? No, I could not.)
