The Kominas are a Muslim punk group from the States. Super-catchy hooks and basslines even if you're not listening to the words. As for the words, they're equal-opportunity offenders--well, it's punk, isn't it? I must remember not to start singing
this[YT] (any part of it!) while walking down the street.
Kitty Pryde is not what you might consider sophisticated music but I still can't stop listening to
Justin Bieber[YT]--there are some really good moments in there. Someone on Metafilter wrote a
powerful defense of one of her other tracks. Well worth reading.
Slowed-down songs are weirdly hypnotic. Wanda Jackson's "Funnel of Love"
at 33 rpm.
And finally, have you heard of
Asakawa Maki? I hadn't until yesterday; she was apparently a very renowned Japanese blues singer. You haven't lived till you've heard House of the Rising Sun
sung in the original Japanese[YT].
Finally, I am just about to go and see a
Smiths cover band! Judging from
a Guardian interview, the lead singer seems to be really thoughtful about the whole phenomenon of cover bands as a fannish act. Worth watching the video there.
