Most of my friends--the ones who enjoy messing about in boats on the Thames, at least--have probably read this already. But maybe not everyone in the world has. On that off chance, I am recommending it here.
Written in 1899, Three Men in a Boat apparently struck some critics as vulgarly slangy and overly populist. Needless to say it was a tremendous success. It tells the story of three young London clerks who decide to get some fresh air and enjoy the pleasures of camping on a trip up the Thames. Everything that can go wrong, does go wrong, and hilarity ensues.
This is a straightforward, easy, entertaining read. Anyone who has ever tried to put up a tent or cook on a camping trip or travel with friends on a budget will identify with it. And yet it will still make you dream of the delights of the Thames Valley. I can't recommend this one too highly.
