VID REC: "Jerusalem" (UK politics RPF)

Jun 23, 2010 20:40

While I haven't been much in a vid-watching mood recently, I just have to rec yunitsa's Jerusalem, which is based on the docudrama When Boris Met Dave.

It's set to a song by the Indelicates (whose fanbase seems to be almost completely made up of Oxford postgrads whom I know personally), cynical and tender by turns, wonderful and terrible at the same time. Even as I detest Boris and Dave and everything that they stand for, I feel that pull of Oxford at my heart and I remember that I was almost as privileged as they were, even though I went the whole of my university career almost without hearing about the Bullingdon Club. And so I waver in a weird fascinated identificatory limbo that's composed of equal parts that's me, that's me mixed with oh help posh Tory boys, what are you thinking, you weren't at Eton, noooo.....

It all made sense to me when I read in her userinfo that yunitsa is at Cambridge. I mean it that in the best possible way. There's a resonance there that says "insider," as monumentally embarrassing as it is to own the sort of insiderdom that links you to the Bullingdon Club and all it stands for.

And I will never go home again
And we will build Jerusalem...

I was there, you know. Albeit with different politics, that's me.
