They said it couldn't happen here

Because of his work, my father subscribes to newsletters from quite a few local churches. These are all mainline Protestant denominations, not fundamentalists. Anyway, in one of these recent newsletters came a one-and-a-half page single-spaced letter from the pastor warning about the evils of "The Golden Compass" and Philip Pullman. Here are the highlights...

There will be a new Children's fantasy movie out this week on December 7th called The Golden Compass. I am very troubled about this movie and the trilogy of books that have been written that this movie is a parr of, and feel compelled to talk to you and warn you about it. I am also hoping that after reading my letter, you will speak with your children, grandchildren and anyone you know regarding this movie.

It is written by Phillip Pullman. He is from England and is a proud atheist who belongs to secular humanist societies. He hates C.S. Lewis' Chronical's [sic] of Narnia and has written a trilogy to show the other side. The movie has been watered down and softened and is the least offensive of the three books, so it will fool kids and their parents in the hope that they will buy his trilogy where in the end the children kill God and everyone can do as they please.

When the newsletter arrived, my father read the letter aloud to my mother and I with great gusto. He has of course read the trilogy--thanks to parrot_knight, who gave it to me--and enjoyed it very much. Somehow I doubt the author of the letter has read it herself.

So there's my bulletin from the land of freedom and opportunity.
