boat life

Feb 11, 2012 12:28

the sun has just peaked through some clouds and through the open hatch are the sound of waves beating against the rock jetty about 100 yards away. it's quiet and peaceful and in a few hours i will turn on the propane tank and make an omelet on my little camping stove.

i love so many things about living on the sailboat and it is restful mornings like this one that affirm my positive feelings. however, living on a sailboat in a harbor full of middle-aged men right next to one of the best surf spots in los angeles does expose one somewhat. about an hour ago i was parking the car after having gone to the local market. i spotted my neighbor (the unemployed screenwriter) who was just getting back from the hardware store because owning a boat is always an ongoing maintenance project.

we chatted amicably with our other neighbor (the finnish computer programmer) as we watched the 15knot winds reek havoc on the surf when greg, the inebriated and outspoken teaparty member decided to join us. now, i consider myself to be a pleasant and tolerant person with plenty of empathy and support to go around, but i do not like greg the hypocritical, outspoken teaparty member. he purposefully pushes all the wrong buttons and has a rather unfortunate knack for finding me whenever i step off the boat.

why, greg? why?
