tonight was just one of those nights where you get off work late and big ben is all lit up with these weird green lights and you hop on the first bus going by that just happens to be filled with american tourists and their children and their strollers and you roll up to victoria station and search in vane for the claire's boutique that the internet said should be there but you dont really trust their website anymore since it also claimed the store you called earlier was located next to whitehall when really it was up near bond street miles away and just when you think you've been duped again you finally find it and rejoice because you are going to a gig tonight that is halloween themed to watch two acquaintance/friends in a ukulele group so you pick up a cat eye mask, a devil mask and a spiderweb mask and jog to a train

then once on the train you look out the window and notice that it is raining and curse yourself for removing your umbrella from your bag that morning because i. it is heavy and ii. it only ever rains when you do not have your umbrella

so you button up your little jacket and wrap your scarf around you and walk home to note that the milkman, whose praises you have been singing this past week, has not delivered your 2 pints of semi-skimmed milk so you make an egg and place it on a slice of toast and that is your dinner cause there is a ukulele gig you gotta go to in 45 minutes in the pub just down the street (the one run by 85 year old women and decorated like the inside of an old ship meets 70s disco club meets hunting lodge)

and you take your umbrella this time thinking you will outsmart the weather, which is always a stupid assumption, and roll up to the monty where an odd man seated at a table demands £4 and tells you that if you only wore a costume you could have got in for £3 at which point you remember the mask in your bag, inform said gentleman, and ask which he thinks you should wear and this turns into a very funny and random conversation involving you putting on the cat mask before fishing out your £3 from your bag, which was a bad idea given the severe limitations to your vision caused by said mask

still, you find those you know, hand out the extra masks, and settle in for ukulele magic and general good times! amazing covers include 'time warp', 'thriller', 'werewolves in london' and a crazy cool 'monster mash' mix with bits of every hit early 90s song you can think of

then, as you listen to the next band (a very very random threesome spoken word/beatbox/electronica type deal) your friend asks if it is snowing outside or really lightly raining at which point you look out one of the 'ship' windows and note that yes, it is in fact SNOWING!!!!

shit

shit

shit

and so, come 1045 you walk home, head down, chin tucked into your scarf, ugg boots sloshing in puddles to arrive at your door covered in snowflakes

and note that winter has officially moved in
