"The lock is close to clicking, I think," Parker says. It's a comment made entirely out of the blue, as they're sitting in the office, waiting for the others to return from the store.
Hardison takes a moment to respond, choking on air a bit. "Yeah?" he finally manages.
She studies him for a second and nods. "It must be," she says, "because I called you."
"Now you lost me, mama," he says, turning in his chair to face her. The pet name slips out easily, but does not go unnoticed by either.
She smiles, a small, almost-secret smile, basking in the affection masked behind that one word. "I got stuck. I got caught in a place that I couldn't get out of, and I called you to come help me."
Hardison wisely stays mute; it's not often Parker is willing to reveal a piece of the ten-thousand piece puzzle that she is, and he doesn't want to ruin his chance at getting that extra piece.
"I could've called Archie, or Nate, but I didn't; I called you. That's gotta mean that the lock is close to clicking, right?" she asks.
She looks so utterly lost and confused, and that's not something Hardison likes to see. So he gently grabs the hand that's leaning on the counter, and rubs the back of it in small circles, hoping to provide some comfort.
Pleased that she hasn't pushed him away, he speaks. "It means whatever you want it to mean."
She looks up at him, and when she speaks, it's softer than before. "What if I want it to mean the lock is about to click?"
He smiles at her, "Then I'll make sure to be there when it does."
It doesn't take long for the lock to finally click.
