I started work on Monday, and I have to say, I really like my job! I'm so glad I can say that I enjoy going to work. Here's what I do: At 1pm, we drive away in our company car to 6 to 9 doctor offices (depending on the day) and pick up anything they have for us. Most of the places give us biopsies to look at, but sometimes we get cooler and larger things like cysts or fallopian tubes or an appendix. Apparently we sometimes get fetus's or limbs or other crazy things like that! Is it wierd that I think this is really cool? Well, either way I don't care because I think it's interesting. So once we've picked up all the samples for the day, we take them over to Lourdes where one of our doctors is working. Then it's my job to prep the stuff for the doctor, which is called grossing. It's a lot of paperwork and remembering to write everything down on everything. I'm kind of scared I'll mess up next week when I'm on my own because there are so many different kinds of tissues and they all have their own kind of paperwork to do. Once everything is ready, the doctor takes a sample of the tissue and puts it in a "block" which is a little holed, plastic container and then puts it in Formalin to preserve it. Then we take the blocks back to the office and the next morning, a tech (at 4:30am every day!) comes in and processes them (I don't know what it entails and probably never will cuz you're not getting me up at that hour) and then they are ready by the time the doctor comes in that morning to actually analyze the sample and determine if anything is wrong with it. I never knew so much went in to that process!
So I'll be couriering 3 times a week and doing office work the other 2 days. I love that I have variety because I get bored easily. Well, I guess I really just wanted to write about work, and now I'm leaving to go to Maren's sister's house where I've been promised Dr. Mario on a big screen TV.
