The world is coming to an end.

I apologize for the melodrama. It seems appropriate, somehow. I have lost what faith I had left in the american people. It truly astounds me to think that 3.5 million people want this individual running our country for the next four years. I am floored. After all the lies and deceit, the injustices of the patriot act, the possibility (or should I say probability) of a draft, the state of the economy, and countless other bullshit we have had to cope with during the span of the last four years ... WHAT?!

A woman I work with is a staunch Bush supporter. She and I have been tiptoe-ing around each other for weeks to maintain a pleasant working environment for everyone else. However ... and I feel horrible for saying this because she is usually the sweetest woman ... I just want to stand up and scream at her and her smugness. She was talking loudly about how Bush had gotten a record number of votes and I *almost* stood up and responded just as loud that Kerry had gotten a record number of votes for a losing candidate, the reason for both being a record number of overall voters ... but I stayed sitting and restrained myself because I don't think it's right to take my anger and frustration out on random people. Shit.

I don't know why I'm shocked and dismayed. I knew Kerry wasn't a strong enough candidate. A coworker just told me to 'just be happy' because there's nothing I can do about any of it at this point and there is no reason to worry or be upset. On the contrary, the reason I'm upset is because the situation is hopeless, and I have no control over any of it. There is a high chance that four of our nine supreme court justices will be retiring within the next four years. The current inhabitant of the throne gets to appoint new justices that serve for life. The only check/balance for this is that the senate gives advice and must approve the selections. Bush will most likely appoint right-wing/conservative/christian fundementalists to the position and the republican-majority senate will wholeheartedly agree. What people are saying is correct ... we will have an administration that gets shit done ... but with a republican majority throughout the system, will it be progressive, productive shit, or just shit? I think it will just be shit, myself.

Edit: Ah, reading back over this I see I was a bit rushed or flustered or annoyed or something ... I spoke of the 3.5 million that voted Bush, when in fact it was something more along the lines of 59 million .. but the amount that decided the vote was the 3.5 million. I think that was what I was getting at. Who knows.
