Jack was working a shift in the clinic when two brothers came in looking like they'd gotten dragged behind a pickup truck on a dirt road for the last two hours - skin ripped, raw, and bleeding. The older one, Dean, bore his injuries with a cynical sense of humor and seemed to be there to placate his brother, Sam, who looked so young with eyes so old, so tired and full of pain.
He recognized those eyes - Jack saw them every time he'd looked in a mirror since getting off the island even though it had been nearly three years. He'd gone straight back to working at the hospital to keep his mind busy, but it barely helped, especially now after everything with Kate and then last week with Locke showing up, saying they needed to go back. Jack wondered what Sam did, what helped him cope through whatever darkness was in the young man's life, but he didn't dare ask. Something told Jack that Sam would just be defensive or deny that anything was wrong, despite the worried looks he kept throwing Dean's way.
A lifetime ago Jack would've tried to help him, taken Sam into his care to protect him, fix him, try and make him whole.
After rounds Jack headed back to his office, slipping a flask out of the inside pocket on his lab coat as he opened the door, startled to see Sam there waiting for him. Sam eyed the flask, his gaze accusatory. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Becoming my father," Jack said after a moment with a dry chuckle.
Sam's glare softened around the edges. "Looks like that's something we have in common."
