Sawyer doesn't think he's the kind of man who will ever be truly happy, so he doesn't bother trying, but the kid - Boone - won't leave him alone. He keeps coming over to the beach, to Sawyer's tent, talking, suggesting ways he could help to get the others to like him. Sawyer tells him that he's sick of his little visits to which Boone responds, "Don't you want someone to care if you die?"
Boone comes back the next day. He sidles up besides Sawyer and kisses him.
He thinks maybe that this is a good place to start.
