I can't think of anything more important than offsetting the effects of global warming.  Maybe you'll think I'm a bitch for saying this, but I'm to the point where I don't want us to find a cure for cancer, or AIDS, or any of that.  We can always make more people.  We cannot, however, make more Pyramids of Egypt, or Great Walls, or Rocky Mountains ( Read more... )

(It's late, so I apologize if I'm not really coherent.)

I agree that climate change is the biggest issue facing us today, not just because of the direct damages to property and human lives, but because it worsens problems in ever area we can conceive of, from health to economies to politics. I also agree that the earth is incredibly overpopulated, to the detriment of the planet and the people on it.

Still, I'm not to the point where I think we should reject helping people (in the way of health care advances, economic aid, etc.) on the basis of "there's too many people and some need to die." Who decides who dies? Under that model, it seems like people that already have access to money or drugs -- the ones contributing so much to the problem of climate change -- would keep surviving at the expense of people who don't yet have that access -- the ones who contribute less to climate change. It seems a bit backwards. We in the US, etc. definitely need to cut our consumption. And a great deal more of our research and investment should be for sustainable development and reducing our impact on the planet and environment -- but I don't think all of it needs to be. We should work toward greater socioeconomic equality and a healthier planet at the same time (not by not helping people since population needs to be cut, but by developing techniques/technologies that will allow the planet to sustain more people with less negative impact; reducing the growth rate, etc.).
