I’m so pleased that the stew-like comment has got such a favourable response. XD
Sounds like you don't need that Arkenstone so bad anymore, Thorin. You've got a new treasure to obsess over eh???? ehhhhh??????? ;D But seriously thinking about it dwarves must be insanely possessive of their significant others. <-- BASICALLY THOUGH, AM I RIGHT?? I am actually crazy-curious about how differently the conflict over the Arkenstone would have gone if Thorin and Bilbo had been in a relationship at the time. *plot bunny* BUT YEAH, it makes complete sense to me that dwarves would be ridiculously possessive over the people they love in the same way that they covet and hoard their gold and wealth. OH DWARVES.
Fili and Kili giving him swordfighting lessons!! :D I am writing this right now and it is much fun.
My personal belief as to why Bilbo gets sad at the end of the chapter - as well as a number of commenters on AO3 - is that Thorin basically mightily fucks up his protective urges. Instead of going ‘hey, Bilbo, you should probably learn how to fight. Let me arrange that for you!’ he basically goes ‘REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NO MATCH AGAINST ANYONE AND ALSO YOU’RE WEAK AND ALSO YES YOU SHOULD DO THIS TO BE MORE USEFUL’, which is not really what he means at all, but Bilbo - used to hearing Thorin say that he’s completely useless - interprets it as being told that he’s still a burden. He interprets Thorin’s worry as anger at him being incapable, and ends up insulted even though Thorin was trying to do something good. Siiiigh, Thorin, you such at all this. *pats him on the head*
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the first chapter, hon, and I’m stoked that you’re excited to see what happens next! It’s definitely not a very plotty fic; often times, in fandom, there are eight million and one ‘how X and Y got together’ stories, but there just aren’t in this fandom. I wanted to actually go through the process of seeing these two characters deal with one another and come to terms with their differences enough for form a relationship. So that’s mostly what you’re going to see, I think. <3
Thank you SO MUCH for the awesome liveblogging comment, and I love your face to pieces! :D :D :D :D
