For what it's worth:

My friend in NYC, Windi, is a nurse-midwife. She had this to share:

I'm wondering if this was the Yucky Grippe that ripped through the co-op in March. Wouldn't that be the joke on us all? The only time this flu made the news it's because poor folk in the most crowded, nearly most polluted city on the planet started dying and MAYBE INFECT US LESS BROWN FOLK EVERYWHERE ELSE. Except I suspect WE gave it to THEM.

Sarcasm. Cynicism. And Irony. :)

Honestly, the flu vaccine is far from fool proof, since it only protects against a few predicted strains of the flu. No one who is caring for people with the flu should feel impervious, even if they had the vaccine for that particular strain. March is part of the prime flu season, so while its possible your friend could have been dealing with early swine flu issues, its (in my non-medical and totally amateur) feeling that she was likely dealing with a particularly bad strain of non-swine (perhaps cow. or lemur? or kangaroo?). Especially since this strain of swine flu has been showing pretty mild cases in the US and other places with decent healthcare practices ( ... )

I'm trying to find the article I spotted yesterday about the little boy in Mexico who may have been the first recognized case in his area. And the question arose as to where he got it.

Two options:
1. The pig farms in the area; however, so far inspectors said the pigs tested show no evidence of the flu. HOWEVER, we are also talking about government inspectors who are not considered incorruptible.

2. The prior to his symptoms, the boy had a visit from family in the US, who came down to Mexico--so yeah, we were discussing this possibility last night.

Also of interest: the boy lives with his mum and younger brother. His mom mentioned that they all sleep in the same bed, and the boy would kiss she and his his younger brother good night every night. They never got the flu.

The boy himself was sick with high fever for one week, then recovered.

The kid from Veracruz!
1. I think its bs that the inspectors arent finding evidence in the pigs, since piggie flu is endemic in pig populations in North America. I call shenanigans!
2. interesting! I hadn't come across that tidbit yet. If you find the link agian, I'd love to read the article.

His mom may have a better immune system, and if his brother is older, I'm guessing thats why de didnt get it either? Interesting.

I'm looking forward to getting more data. No one enjoys a good epidemic like me! (That may come across badly. But since I get the flu pretty bad every other year or so in spite of vaccines, I think I'm entitled!)
