There is still no information on the website for the Makapansgat field school, even though it says to "check back later in the year for field school 2009". Its pretty damn late in the year! Oh well. I'm likely not going at this point (though there is always the possibility of future sessions!) since saving that much money is turning out to be quite a challenge.
Fortunately, one of our archaeology instructors, Mark Basgall (who is the proverbial shit when it comes to California arch) has heeded the desperate(ly poor) pleas of his students and is setting up a field school for CSUS students to
NAWS China Lake. W00t! Remember that field/ lab class I took last year that turned out to be just lab, and I was so annoyed? Well, Basgall is adding a 3 unit component under the field class number for Spring semester. This means that instead of taking an easy 12 units like I had planned, its back to 15. BUT its okay, because there will only be 2-3 meetings where we will get reading material on the site and talk about whats going to happen in the field, and then 1-2 10 day rotations either over spring break or at the end of the semester. The best part? Basgall expects that it will cost about $250, for food and such. Looks like we'll be camping, but with showers and access to a kitchen. I have a sleeping bag, but I may need to look into acquiring a tent. And good boots! Which I was going to need this summer anywya, if my plan to shovel bum works out.
Can you see me dancing in joy? I've always wanted to go out to China Lake since I first heard about it while working at OHP. It seems that the site out there is directly in the path of the missile tests. So, you know, there's the fun and excitement of the more run of the mill arch stuff (hey, look! i found a point!) and then there's the added bonus of the Indiana Jones stuff ("DUCK!"). Its a win-win!
In other news, Linguistics finished on Wednesday, so I got to sleep in today, guilt free. It was glorious, though I was woken up by the leaf blower. I'm contemplating going back to sleep for another hour or so. I have work (Carrots! Yippee!) today, so I can't sleep too long... but my, its nice to be able to sleep in at all.
