my 22nd - part three of three.

my 22nd.

and i just realised i totally forgot about the last part of my birthday celebration. i had lunch at home with the family, and mommy cooked my favorite meesua, one which i've been asking her to cook for me for a long time. and i realise that every family has different meesua styles. my mom cooks meesua with pork broth, filled with lean meat, yummy liver, chinese mushrooms and a hard-boiled egg. but my grandma cooks them more traditionally, in my opinion. my grandma cooks her broth with something called "jin zhen" and mushrooms, and possibly some pork. she then fills up the bowl veg, some roasted pork, peanuts, "hei cai" and fried egg. i love both ways and my entire family loves meesua because we only get them at birthdays and chinese new year. and for my grandma, it's only during chinese new year that she cooks it. my entire family eats at least two bowls of meesua, so every year at chinese new year, my uncle would buy 5 kg of meesua for the entire family. and sometimes, it's not even enough. =P

so i've been making noise and wanting to go to nectarie for tea because i'm craving for granny smith apple crumbles. i love crumbles. give me peach crumbles, apple crumbles, strawberry crumbles, i'll take them all. but i particularly love apple crumbles, especially those made from granny smith apples. it's supposedly some special breed of apples especially suited for making apple pies, apple crumbles, etc - due to the texture of the apples. when you caramelize it, it won't be too soft, remain too hard, and has the right sweetness to it. and you seldom see granny smith apples in singapore. i regret not buying them when i saw it last at cold storage. so anyways, ziwei finally brought me there so i could have high tea like a tai tai. ziwei had the double chocolate mud cake which had gold on the raspberries! and i got to have it! haha.. i love raspberries. they're awesome-ly fabulous. you can feel all the individual sachets of the berry when you bite into it. and imagine raspberries with strawberry ice-cream and waffles. that's like a dessert orgasm.

so we walked around and slowly made our way to Greenwood Fish Market and Bistro for my birthday dinner. my very suspicious birthday dinner. we actually planned to head over to outback steakhouse but the reviews i saw online were either very good or very bad. so i didn't want to go there, spend 30 plus on a mediocre piece of steak, or possibly very bad piece of steak. and i was preferring seafood anyways, so we decided to try the food there since the reviews online were ravingly good. so the whole setup was very suspicious because we arrived first and were seated at a table for 5. it was only after the boy kept moving here and there then the other 3 - Roc, Jessie and Larry came. see! suspicious right! haha.. anyways, it was good to see them again. especially larry - i haven't seen him since chinese new year when we played mahjong at his house and lost terribly to roc and jessie. kns. anyways, we ordered the hot seafood platter. the grilled fish skewers were really good. it was so fresh and nicely seasoned. the oysters were a little too fresh for me because it tasted fishy. but that's what VERY freshly grilled oysters tasted like. the mussels and crayfish and squid was really good. definitely good enough as a starter for 5. then we ordered two fish and chips - one battered and one breaded. i much preferred the breaded one - a refreshing touch compared to other restaurants where the fish and chips are mostly battered. the main point here is - FRESH SEAFOOD. the fish and chips were so freaking scrumptious. you could taste the freshness of the fish. the fish wasn't overcooked, it was just nice with a very slight touch of pink in the fish. definitely worth the price.

we were supposed to head to holland v for 2AM dessert bar but roc and jessie headed off for home because jessie had her exams coming up. and larry was tired. so in the end ziwei and i headed back to my place for cake and we just sat downstairs chatting and enjoying the rest of my birthday. it was a good thing the sky was clear, the stars were out and the breeze was just right.

oh! and i must mention that silly ziwei tried to trick me that his internet was sot and he had to go fix it when actually he was coming over with a surprise muffin at the stroke of 12 midnight on 5th july to celebrate my birthday. silly him stood at the mini pond facing my room, called me, asked me to look out my window and started singing happy birthday to me from downstairs at 12 midnight. it was honestly touching and silly-ly romantic. thanks dear.

so anyway, this concludes my 22nd birthday (though i'd like to continue thinking i'm only 18).. and a big thanks to all of those who wished me happy birthday and those who celebrated with me. i appreciate it lots. and thanks dear, i really enjoyed myself and had tons of fun. i love you. =)
