Summer Blockbusters

I keep telling myself that movies are so expensive and that I'll stop, I really will, and then some new awesome movie comes out and everyone wants to see it and I go after all.  and of course, I''m not going to skimp for Harry Potter, heck no, I'm probably going to see that at least two three times.  oh and I owe Elizabeth money.

what I've seen this summer (some spoilers):

Spiderman 3

omg, opening night at the Esquire with like a quarter of WashU shouting and screaming, and like, a final the next morning.  but who cares.  oh, so good.  clearly, this movie was not produced for quality nor coherence, but for sheer entertainment value?  A++.  I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a movie.  oh yes, we are laughing at you Tobey McGuire, not with you.  just so many things were ridiculously wrong with the characters that you could almost forget about how ill-construed the plot was, could almost forgive the producers for going back and altering the plot of the first movie to fit in an unnecessary new character.  that is not to say that the new villains are in any way inferior.  that first chase scene between Spiderman and the Green Goblin Number Two is probably one of the best scenes in the trilogy.  but don't go in expecting quality.  too many people make that mistake and end up disappointed.  suspend your disbelief for three hours and laugh as widely as James Franco grins.

PotC 3

let's be honest here: I was never a big Pirates fan.  I don't think Johnny Depp is hot, and although the first movie was well played, the second was not and enough to make me back away from Pirates forever.  too many things in the first two movies I didn't understand, and didn't care enough about to work out the knots in the plot.  oh, and I kind of hate Keira Knightly.  as a character, she's irritating, and as a person?  she's sort of horsey looking.  get a orthodontist, Keira Knightly, before your underbite bites someone's nose off.

with that said...I loved Pirates 3.  the plot was intricate but flowed well, the characters not well established but their roles simple enough to be appreciated two dimensionally, and, okay fine.  Orlando Bloom is so, so attractive as a pirate.  the scene where he rose out of the sea as the new Davy Jones, greasy locks framing his girlish face was the stuffs of fantasies.  still, even without that gratuitous scene the rest of the movie was still beautiful.  I loved the little boy in the beginning.

Knocked Up

alright, so I was really too cheap to go see this in theatres so instead I watched it on tv-links.  Judd Apalow, the producer, is one of my favorite producers ever and created such geniuses as "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared", and people from all over kept telling me to watch this movie, so you know, I went in with fairly high expectations.  the movie was okay, I guess.  it wasn't hilarious like people kept saying.  I got a little bored, and considered at various points to stop watching altogether, but motivated by high reviews I plowed forward.  everyone loved it though, so you should probably see it to see if you're one of them, or one of me.

Transformers

this is a movie that was modeled after the male fantasy.  everything, from the mighty morphing super robots from space to the hot, hot girls have been carefully designed for maximum appeal to guys.  the movie was loud, the explosions many, and everything else was absolutely ridiculous.  for so many plot designs, I watched and thought, really?  like...really?  however, it was classic "Even Stevens" Shia LeBeouf, and the humorous bits were genuinely funny, so I enjoyed it.  and, don't get me wrong, the CGI was spectacular, and definitely worth going for.

Ocean's 13

I didn't see 12 because it was notoriously bad and I didn't want to spoil the genius that was Ocean's 11.  however, 13 was not bad.  the archenemy was rather pathetic, and a lot of the movie seemed to be focused on making one man's life miserable, but, better than I expected.  the plots were scattered enough so that they appeared less flimsy than they were, and truly, the hotel was beyond beautiful.  true, the movie was shallow and played out like a truffle with the inside scooped out so leaving you feeling rather hollow, but you know what?  George Clooney is really attractive.  and Brad Pitt is really attractive.  and both of them together is wonderful like I cannot even describe.  I do have one major issue with this movie though: where are all of the women?  Cameron Diaz is nowhere near an adequate substitute for Julia Roberts, not for a long shot.  all they said was, "this is a man's job," and that was that.  poof!  all the women disappeared.
