#013 - Vacation in Spain

During the vacation I went to Spain, which is one of my favourite countries! Sadly, I was only there for three days, which left me just enough time to go shopping and yes - karting. It was really an amazing experience and I learnt quite a lot from it. This is because it’s the first other circuit I’ve ever driven on. Since I’ve gone all obsessive over it I mean - since I’ve set my mind on getting really good. So, I’d been wondering how I’d do on another track. Would I easily identify the ideal line? Would I adapt to other karts?

The track wasn’t quite what I expected. The receptionist at our (AMAZING) hotel only knew of this circuit and recommended it. We went there by taxi, with a really nice driver who was very surprised I wanted to kart, although you could see he really didn’t expect me to be any good. He was going to pick my mother and me up again after two hours or so.

I did two heats. The first one went horribly wrong - the kart was broken. I already noticed in the first turn, but I wasn’t sure if these karts were supposed to be this slow. I couldn’t get it to go any faster. After the heat I asked my time and the fastest time that had ever been done. My time and the fastest time were NINE seconds apart. This was just impossible, however arrogant that might sound. I told the mechanic that and he didn’t really believe me, but another mechanic had seen me drive and probably saw that my driving style was good and that I tried to get the maximum speed out of that kart. The second mechanic checked the kart and what did he seeeeeeee? It was broken!

I did a second heat and immediately the speed was right, I could tell. After the heat finished I saw my time was within three seconds of the fastest time ever! I think that’s quite an achievement after being on that track for only ten minutes. =) Especially when you consider my fastest time was set in my second lap!

I’ve set myself the goal to visit other tracks more recent, I think it might really help!
