#041 - Berghem Results (29/03/2009)
We did two heats in total. The first one.. let’s just call it a warming up. The first things I noticed were how different the lapsed time between hitting the brake and the actual braking were from what I was used to, and ditto with the steering. Unfortunately for me, I discovered this while attempting to make a turn, which ended in a major spin. Oh well, I’d rather spin two, three times, than crash. I actually did make about three more spins before I got used to the kart. To save myself from the embarrassment a bit; there was light rain, which also made the track more slippery, so it wasn’t entirely due to my inexperience. (My first time on a wet track by the way!)
I started the second heat with an incredibly smart move on my part, I switched karts with my brother, because I had a feeling the differences in karts were much larger here than at De Fabrique. I was proven right. The steering and braking were - once again - entirely different than the previous kart, but easier to adapt to. I soon found myself driving the ideal line and felt I had perfect grip. Me and Joey actually had some fun racing and overtaking each other.
When the marshalls brought the lap times they came up to yours truly, and announced that I - a lady - had beaten all of the guys. Ka-ching! I asked him what the track record was, but since they change layouts all the time, there was no way of knowing, however he could tell me the time he had driven that morning, which was bound to be extremely close to the fastest possible. He drove a 1:03.8 (one minute, three seconds and eight tenths) - only eight tenths difference with me!
Oh, and just so you know - Joey works at a kart circuit and gets to drive there for free a couple of times a week and is eight tenths faster than me at De Fabrique. BUT I BEAT HIM HERE! He actually told me he went karting in Berghem before, so it’s even more awesome that I beat him! It wasn’t even that small of a difference; half a second.
