The kind of login depends on what you want for the Sketch Fest. Assuming that drawing in more people would be welcome, having it only integrated with the lilipad, and guests can't register, wouldn't be a good idea. If people who wanted to sign up for the Sketch Fest had to sign up as an EMG customer, I'm sure it'd put off at least some people, on the lines of "this is just a scam to get people to subscribe to the zine/buy stuff from the shop". And requiring an EMG ARTIST login to register would only make sense if you wanted the Sketch Fest to be primarily for EMG artists, leaving everyone else second-class participants. :P On the other hand, a separate Sketch Fest login would mean yet one more login for people. OpenID is most, well, open, but assuming everybody has an OpenID is a bit optimistic.
*heh* My ideal-from-a-user's-perspective solution, setting aside coding complexity, would be offer all as options... Register with Open ID, separately, or integrated with artist login, or with customer login.
For a simple solution, I think I'd favour OpenID; going from what you wrote, those without one could still participate, just not benefit from a few options.
A well-thought-out response. As someone who was alerted to the Sketch Fest by a friend who participated in July (I missed registering by only a couple of hours =( ) I am eager to take part in the August event. I've been combing the EMG site, Livejournal, etc. so I can get a basic understanding of how to register, claim, submit, etc. As someone currently viewing this issue from the outside I would vote for simplification and inclusion. Anything that makes it easier to get in and navigate will be more encouraging to newcomers like me.
I do not have an OpenID...um...ID, but I would be willing to create one for this. I just want to understand the hows and wheres in time for August. =)
I didn't know LJ was an open ID thing either, until I asked about it on here.
I'm sorry you mssed this Sketchfest (I didn't think there was a deadline on registering?), but am glad you will be joining us for the next one. The more the marrier! :)
I've begun to understand that the registering is a far looser concept than I thought at first. Hopefully by the time August Sketch Fest rolls around I will understand the whole process better. The sketching I can do - just trying to get a handle on the registering/claiming/submitting parts.
I think it is a really cool and inventive idea and I can't wait to be a part of it with you guys. =D
