Computer follow up

Aug 07, 2010 14:44

I have no idea what this virus is called, but it does a bunch of nasty things: it told me that every program I tried to launch (specifically AVG) was corrupted and couldn't be accessed; it pulled up IE with porn websites; it popped up with a supposed "Windows" virus software that kept popping up with boxes with alerts to all of these viruses that I don't even know were real; ans, it directed me to a website to buy the full version of this software to get rid of these viruses. However, it was impossible to accomplish anything because of how much wreckage this thing was creating.

So I thought that I might be able to fix it by going into safe mode and then restoring to a previous date. Naturally, I couldn't remember how to do either of those things. I decided to try once before giving up and waiting until Mom's next paycheck to have someone else fix it.

I turned my computer on and just happened to luck out with hitting F2 at the right time to get to safe mode startup. Once everything loaded, I tooled around until I found the system restore. My computer thinks it's a week ago now.

After it restarted (which it did with no problem -- generally, going through a restart causes a blue screen of death because of my crappy battery) I had no problem! YAY! I'm glad I was able to fix it myself... The alternative would have sucked.
