Holy HELL it's hellish outside

And it's only mid-June. I'm seriously scared about August/September. With things already this hot (it didn't get below 78 degrees last night, high humidity, and basically no wind... a hot wet blanket over the area), I wouldn't be surprised if things started forming in the Gulf. However, it's also really really dry, because the jet stream is north of us right now, and NOTHING resembling a front is headed our way. Our last real rain was about a month ago. There are several signs that it's really hot and dry here: all of the flowers/buds are drying up and wilting off the bushes out front, the oak tree out front looks sad, and the roaches are coming in every available crack. This last one is the most annoying and potentially scary. After finding TWO really really REALLY BIG ones in my bathroom - a horrible thing to discover when half awake and stumbling to the potty - I've taken steps to keep them out. I've put the stopper down in the drain in the bathtub and stuffed the overflow drain on the tub wall with saran wrap. Now, I'll have to at least open up the bottom drain when taking a shower (once we get my bathroom together, which should be happening in the next couple of weeks), but I'll be closing it again afterward. I mean, 3" cockroaches are NOT something I want to deal with on a regular basis, thank you.

I did do something good for myself this morning: I woke up fairly early and went out. I headed over to Starbucks and worked on my self-imposed Bible study stuff (basically, I'm using the Daily Office readings from the Book of Common Prayer, and either reading them, or writing them down for my own benefit). I then drove around with the sun roof open so I could get my vitamin D intake before it gets ridiculously hot. It was already 87 at 11:45. I'm staying in for the rest of the day now. In a tank top and shorts, which Mom and Sis kid me about because they're old and falling apart, but comfortable, both wear-wise and temperature-wise.

The local firefighters were out collecting for their muscular dystrophy (I think) campaign, so I threw a couple of bucks into the VERY CUTE firefighter's boot. They're always cute. I love firefighters.

I'm also trying to get over the series of nightmares I had last night. It was one of those things where I'd have a nightmare, wake up, turn over, and get a new nightmare that was a slightly different variation on the same theme. If felt like it lasted FOREVER. It started out as a Star Trek (the dark Borg-y/new-old crew type) type of dream, where we were being beset by bad aliens and I had to defend myself against them. I woke up, turned over, and then had a dream where I was trying to fight Dad's sick plans for me and Sis, but I kept getting foiled, and everywhere I ran, I couldn't keep him out. I woke up, turned over, and then it was this sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, Dad dream where myself and my crew were being attacked and people were dying one by one in horrific gorey ways. That one repeated about three times before I was finally able to wake up fully. I'm still creeped out, and even though we live in different cities now, I still kept thinking I saw Dad driving up to the Starbucks (which is finally why I came home). Serves me right for sleeping during the evening after eating chinese food, I guess.
