Movie Mistake of Mythic Proportions
I blame my mother for this one.
I was channel surfing this afternoon and happened to run across Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on HBO. This was fortunate and funny since I had mentioned it specifically in my last post. So I watched it. I paid attention to Kevin Costner's accent problems - his biggest issue seemed to be his "a"s and "o"s. When he said, "This is my land!" he didn't soften the "a." I can see now why he was given such a hard time about his accent fading in and out. Technically, it was rarely there.
The point of this post, however, is the major error in judgment I made regarding Azeem (Morgan Freeman's character). The witch, Mortianna, at one point tells the Sheriff of Nottingham that she "sees their death." Hers is in "the painted man," referring to Azeem. Okay. Be prepared to laugh. Have you ever seen Morgan Freeman in closeup? He has freckles. In a very distinct pattern. Like they were put there in lines, okay? So when I thought she was referring to a "painted man" I thought she was talking about his distinctive freckles, not the fact that he was black. This started in '91 when the film opened (meaning I was 10), and persisted until today. When it finally dawned on me that she was talking about his skin color. The reason I wrote what I did as my opening sentence was because Mom's influence in my life is what I blame for this misconception. I grew up, and still am, very unruffled by differences like color, or religion, etc. So I went past the obvious and went to the detailed because the obvious didn't even occur to me.
