Alright so the post some people have been waiting for, my recap of teching at the 2009 Golden Globes!! :)
Alright so my dad and a friend of his have a satellite truck and do shit for news stations. They did the Critics Choice Awards this year as well. So I drove up on Saturday night at about 6.30 and it was a 2 and 1/2 hour drive up to Marina Del Rey which was where they were sleeping for the night. I got there at exactly 9pm and that was when my dad said he was going to be in bed by so it all worked out. We slept on the couch with the dog at my feet. We had a 4am wake up; therefore my dad and I went to sleep at about 10. Before going to bed he showed me some video and photos from the Critics Choice Awards. I wish I had gone to those because they were right at the barrier. It probably would've been really cool to go.
We woke up at 4 and had some cereal. The wake up call wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was up and energized and so were the other two. We left at 4.30 and arrived at the Beverly Hilton at 5am just in time to park in the back before they locked up the lot and closed down the street. I was sent on a mission to get 9volt batteries in which I had to drive my father's Escalade. I couldn't see over the hood and i didn't even get out of the lot because it was lock unbeknownst to myself and the rest of the crew. So I never had to go get those 9volts. Awesome.
they were parked behind us.
So for the most of the early morning I was running equipment from the truck to the two channels' spots we were working for, Channel 9 Australia and BBC. I also ran some wires from the box to our spots as well. That's all I was doing for the first seven hours. By the time 11am came around there were a lot of other channel crews there setting up. I met the cameramen and the correspondence lady. They had nice accents. 11am meant sitting at the BBC spot testing equipment making sure it actually worked. I worked on heatsets and earpieces mostly.
So I didn't have proper credencials which meant a badge which where I could and couldn't go because I had to have been up there the thursday before and they weren't willing to just make me one right there. So I had a wristband that let me stay on the red carpet until 3pm and when 3pm came around no one kicked me out so I was able to stay there until after the pre-show was over which was around 6pm.
I saw a lot of people go by on the red carpet: Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Debra Messing, most of the cast of the Office, Anne Hatheway, the Cyrus family, and a lot of people that looked familiar but I couldn't place. I'll definitely have pictures up that I took when I see my dad on Thursday.
All in all, I had a lot of fun and hope to do more teching in the future.
I had my dad run me back to my car in Marina Del Rey so I could drive home and be back at a decent time. The drive home was uneventful but fun. I always like long distance drives. Lots of Bob Dylan sing-a-longs and eating pasta I bought at Ralphs before I left MDR. I got home at exactly 9pm which was suprising.
the 405 at about 7pm.
