The moonlight glittering down through the tree top cover of the woods created just enough light to let Sakura comfortably watch Naruto and his Genin team make their campsite for the evening from her spot sitting against the trunk of a tall Maple. Once it looked like the kids had a handle on setting up the area, Naruto trotted over and flopped down next to Sakura.
She and Naruto shared a smile at the kids' excitement; it wasn't hard to see even though they tried to hide it. Naruto had regaled the three young ninja often with tales of his days as a Genin and the formation of Team Seven - always focusing only on the good memories. One of the more popular stories was the time they traveled to the Land of Snow and protected Princess Koyuki. Faced with a lengthy escort mission outside of Konoha and a chance to meet someone who knew their teacher at their age, the Genin were ecstatic and rapidly went through the tedious tasks of setting up camp without the usual whining and moaning they were apt to do.
For Sakura, it gave her the opportunity to dwell on memories of their lost teammate that always came to mind when they went on missions. It didn't matter how many years had passed since Team Seven became a team of two or that they weren't inexperienced Genin anymore, Sakura still expected to see him there with them around every corner.
The similarities between Naruto's new team and their old team added fuel to the reminiscing. When Daisuke departed into the bushes to search for flint and firewood, Sakura couldn't help but remember it was Sasuke that would do that task. They always assumed it was so he could escape and be on his own for awhile away from the distractions and rowdiness that comes with being on a team with a pervert, a loudmouth and a fangirl. And the Genin getting tangled up amongst the ropes changed to Hikari, but once upon a time that was Naruto thrashing about.
The three bedrolls bunched together were still a part of the evening but she was no longer sleeping in the middle, sandwiched between Naruto and Sasuke. No, now she shared one with Naruto on the other side of the campfire which was once Kakashi's domain. At a point in the evening the memories would become too much for Sakura and a sound that was half laugh and half sob would emerge from lips, causing her to burrow deeper into Naruto's hold, her tears wetting his neck and chest while he soothingly rubbed her back and tightened his embrace.
So entranced by her emotions, Sakura would never notice that Naruto's eyes were shining from tears as well. They were what was left of a once promising team, and the bonds created that one sunny afternoon all those years ago would never be broken, even now when there were only two left. They just got stronger.
